From knowing everything to knowing nothing: The process of unlearning

Updated: Nov 9, 2023

Growing up, we all had a phase when we claimed or pretended that we knew it all. It was the high school time, that's when we knew everything and we were better off in everything compared to others. In our minds, every choice, every single thing we associate ourselves with, like our favourite band, our favourite sports teams, TV show or movies, everything was superior to others. We just knew better than the rest.

I remember how I was not ready to listen to pretty much anyone. The opinions from parents, teachers and even friends didn’t matter then because ‘I knew better’ and nobody was ‘cool enough’ to listen to. It was not just me, a lot of my friends believed and felt the same at this age.

Zidane (not Zinedine), a friend, said how this persisted for longer with him and how not being open to listen and learn, stopped from growing out of the bubble of knowing everything. As we got older, things around us made us realise there is a lot we do not know. This is where one starts to unlearn and be open to learn.

Different things must have made us realise the importance of being open to learning. That could be even a humbling we got from our teachers, parents or anyone around us. Something which gives us a reality check and shows us there are a lot of things around you which you have no clue about.

Ayesha talks about how she always claimed to know better and used to give advice even where advice wasn't needed, and people used to get frustrated with this and be distant with her. “Somewhere along the way my mother helped me learn to not preach where it's not needed as people easily blame it on you when things fall apart,” she said. She also expressed how her mother humbled her

when she preaches about things thinking she knows them and helped her learn the importance of learning as well as unlearning.
